Markus van Hauten – Questions for…

Introduction:

We received many impressive photos from dedicated photographers for our Datacolor photo contest about travel and landscape photography that took place in Germany during summer 2017. Our jury had a hard time selecting the five winning images, as so many photos would have deserved to be awarded. In order to savor these wonderful images, we will present some of these pictures in our blog from time to time, introduce you to the photographer and tell the story behind the image.

Name:
Markus van Hauten
Vita:
I’m 48 years old, married and I have two children. I studied Electrical Engineering with a focus on Telecommunication Engineering.
When did you start your photography?
My interest in photography got started in 2006 when my wife and I visited Iceland for the first time and I bought a DSLR before the trip. Ever since I have been hooked.
Is photography your hobby or your profession?
Photography is my passion and a very important part of my life, next to my profession and my family.
How and where was the image taken which you entered to the competition? Is there a story about it?
The image was taken in Iceland and it shows the Vestrahorn Mountain in the southeastern part of Iceland. I love to be in Iceland in January as the days are short and the low sun creates fantastic lighting. On this particular morning, the conditions were ideal. There was no wind (something that hardly happens in Iceland), it was chilly and there was a slight fog coming in from the sea. A few clouds in the sky and a beautiful sunrise in my back! I knew immediately this would be a great image.
Who and/or what inspires you most?
There’s nobody in particular inspiring me, as there are so many talented photographers.
What’s your photographic focus?
My focus is on landscape photography. Sports photography is another one.
What’s your next photo project, your next challenge?
I’ve just been to Scotland for 6 days and will go to Tuscany in November. Perhaps I’ll return to Iceland next year as well.
Do you include color management in you photographic workflow?
Color management is very important. I calibrate my monitor on a regular basis, as that is the only way to ensure correct colors reflecting precisely what I saw.
What do you do with your photos, do you print them, post them on your social media accounts or your website or do they simply stay on your hard drive?
An important part of my work is publishing the images. Selected images are available in calendars or as prints. I also publish them on my social media accounts as well as my homepage. Taking part in photography competitions is also important to me.
What’s your photographic goal?
To me it’s important to evoke emotions with my images. It makes me very happy when people respond to my images and provide feedback.
