Bastian Werner – Questions for…

Introduction:

We received many impressive photos from dedicated photographers for our Datacolor photo contest about travel and landscape photography that took place in Germany during summer 2017. Our jury had a hard time selecting the five winning images, as so many photos would have deserved to be awarded. In order to savor these wonderful images, we will present some of these pictures in our blog from time to time, introduce you to the photographer and tell the story behind the image.

Name:
Bastian Werner
CV
Born in 1993, Bastian has been chasing thunderstorms and the weather since 2010. He wrote a book called „Taking photographs through wind and weather“. Bastian travels through Germany, always looking for the most beautiful weather situations.
When did you start your photography?
I have been a fan of aviation since my early childhood. That’s why I got a gliding certificate, which brought me to meteorology. Today, I photograph the weather.
Is photography your hobby or your profession?
I currently make a living with photography.
How and where was the image taken which you entered to the competition? Is there a story about it?
I chose an early start to head off to Mehlinger Heide, a small heather area near Kaiserslautern, Germany. Weather models forecasted veils of mist right during heather bloom. Just when I arrived, I discovered this perfect spider web in dawn. A quick check and I was sure that the sun was about to rise exactly behind the tree – beams of haze! I positioned my camera and took a few trial shots until I had found my composition. I waited for the sun to reach a point high enough up in the sky for this great radiance effect. I then stacked the photos in order to achieve a greater depth of field and took an HDR-shot for the background.
Who and/or what inspires you most?
Kilian Schönberger inspires me the most. Over and over, he manages to show images taken in Germany I have never seen before.
What’s your photographic focus?
Weather.
What’s your next photo project, your next challenge?
I cannot write about that yet.
Do you include color management in your photographic workflow?
Color management helps me to create different results with my images, as colors transport emotions and moods.
What do you do with your photos? Do you print them, post them on your social media accounts or your website, or do they simply stay on your hard drive?
Most of them stay online or on my storage devices. Some are printed.
What’s your photographic goal, what do you dream of?
I would love to photograph every weather phenomenon on this planet once.
