Michael Natschke – Questions for

When did you start your photography?

In the seventies when my parents gave me an Agfamatik Pocket Camera.

Is photography your hobby or your profession?

Photography is primarily a hobby. But I also have a registered business, as I participate in arts and crafts markets where I sell my photographs as canvas-prints.

How and where was the image taken that you entered into the competition? Is there a story about it?

The photo was taken in March 2019 in Iceland on Diamond Beach (Breidamerkursandur). I went to the beach early in the morning. The rising sun shines straight through the ice that is more than 1000 years old. The sun makes the most beautiful colors appear. Diamond Beach is one of the best photo spots in the world.

Who and/or what inspires you most?

Nature, as it is the greatest artist after all.

What’s your photographic focus?

I focus on three different areas: astronomy, the aurora and nature photography.

What’s your next photo project, your next challenge?

Next year at the end of April / beginning of May, I am going to visit Iceland’s Westfjords for two weeks. I hope to discover more beautiful landscapes again and capture them through my photos.

Do you include color management in your photographic workflow?

Since I print and sell my pictures on canvas, color management plays a very important role for me. The printed pictures need to look like how I saw them on my screen. For this reason, I have been using a Spyder for some time and regularly calibrate my screen.

What do you do with your photos? Do you print them, post them on your social media accounts or your website or do they simply stay on your hard drive?

With my pictures, I create photobooks for private use, sell my images as canvas prints and create multi-vision shows. I also run a homepage and feed my social media accounts on Facebook and Instagram.

What’s your photographic goal? What do you dream of?

A dream would be a publication in National Geographic or GEO.
