Questions for – Reinhard Loher

Reinhard Loher, is a media designer and father of two. He’s been an avid photographer since he was young, and is now a Fujifilm X-Photographer, giving workshops, training and speaking engagements.

When did you start your photography?

My dad got me started in photography when I was about 14 years old. My first camera was a YASHICA MG. I was involved in several photography clubs at school, where I learned how to take photos and how to work in a darkroom. At that time, during the “analog” era, I filled countless photo albums and slide boxes with my pictures. I was always in search of “the picture” and that still hasn’t changed for me.

I began working in digital photography in 2005, with a Canon EOS 10D. Since then, I’ve gotten more and more into digital photography, honing my skills and developing my expertise in Photoshop. Since 2014, I have also been working as a lecturer for “FUJIFILM-School” and was subsequently accepted by Fujifilm as a “X-Photographer” – there are only about 100 of them worldwide.

Is photography your hobby or your profession?

It is a passion of mine that I do part-time, along with organizing numerous events.

How and where was the image taken which you entered to the competition? Is there a story about it?

The picture was taken at a workshop I had organized in Andorf with Jens Burger, one of my dearest colleagues and friends.

Who and/or what inspires you most?

Actually, I find inspiration with every one of my fellow photographers, but also with participants in my workshops. We share ideas and work together so that they can be fully developed. Some of my role models in photography include my colleagues Jens Burger, Dieter Hirt and Eberhard Schuy. With regard to photo composition and Photoshop, I am inspired by Peter Braunschmid and Olaf Giermann.

What’s your photographic focus?

I enjoy photographing people and landscapes, as well as both macro and product photography, but I don’t limit myself to any specific type of photography. I also love working with Photoshop, especially the creative aspect of being able to design images that cannot be photographed. I enjoy learning new things and love photographic challenges.

What’s your next photo project, your next challenge?

  • A Charity Event in November with the Avengers
  • Landscape photography during summer in Italy (South Tyrol)
  • A photo exhibition of my images
  • New workshops focusing on different topics

Do you include color management in your photographic workflow?

Color management is essential in ensuring the color accuracy of my clients’ images in their catalogs. Of course, it is equally important in my Photoshop work, where colors play a major part in imagery and mood.

What do you do with your photos? Do you print them, post them on your social media accounts or your website or do they simply stay on your hard drive?

I print a lot of pictures, because I feel this is simply the best way to view a photograph. I swap out the pictures on my walls on a monthly basis so I can share and enjoy them all. I also create photo books about four times a year as memory keepsakes, and I also post many of my images on social media.

What’s your photographic goal? What do you dream of?

I love to pass on my knowledge and experience to others. That’s why I enjoy traveling to trade shows and fairs and would like to do more of that. I’ve made many new friends this way. One of my immediate goals is to do an exhibition of my photographs.
