As a photographer, photo tour guide and biologist, Daniel Spohn travels the world in search of unique and exciting subjects. For him, photography is an intensive examination of his subject, its surroundings and the lighting moods that affect them. Whether Africa, Australia or the Arctic Circle, his preference for breathtaking landscapes, impressive wildlife and intact, often endangered nature takes him and to the remote regions of our planet again and again. He is also fond of the “wilderness” on his doorstep in Germany and Europe. His pictures tell a story about the fragility of the moment and as a lecturer and photo trainer he is happy to pass on his experience.

Are you doing photography, videography or both?

How did you get your start in photography/videography?

It started with biology and herpetological excursions.

What is your photo/video genre and what motivated you to focus on it?

It’s nature photography with all its sub-genres such as landscape, wildlife and macro photography. For me, nature photography means an intensive examination of my subject, my surroundings and the lighting moods that affect them.

What has been your biggest achievement or obstacle along the way?

It’s hard to say. Probably that I can make a living from what I do.

Who and/or what inspires you most?

To make a long story short: Nature. I find it very difficult to draw inspiration from the work of other photographers. I tend to feel creatively blocked or my image idea to be too externally briefed. My image idea has to develop on location, in harmony with the prevailing conditions.

What is your approach? Is there anything in particular you try to achieve during a shoot or are there any specific techniques you use?

In my opinion, the technique used always follows the idea of the picture. A good image should be able to trigger a mental movie, tell a story and provide an emotional insight.

Why is accurate color important within your workflow?

I like consistent colors from capture to print and not a lucky bag depending on the output or viewing medium.

Any tips or advice for photographers just beginning their career?

Dedicate yourself to the motives and genre that really interest you and don’t bow to what supposedly promises money. Only your deep, honest interest – which, by the way, can also develop gradually and expand to different genres – will enable you to take really convincing pictures.
