Datacolor LightColor Meter: Beyond Auto White Balance for Managing Mixed Light Sources

Improve Documentary Footage Quality with Accurate Light Measurement
The Datacolor LightColor Meter is not only an important tool on film sets, but can also significantly reduce post-production work on documentary productions by allowing cameras to be adjusted more precisely to the lighting conditions on location. By measuring color temperature and establishing accurate white balance settings, filmmakers can improve source file quality while minimizing the need for extensive color grading later.
Mixed lighting, working with different color temperatures from daylight and artificial light, is relatively easy to avoid on a controlled set, as lighting fixtures with adjustable color temperature and digital readouts have become the industry standard. However, there is one important point to keep in mind: even here, the color temperature shown on the display often differs from reality.
The fact is that even expensive lights from well-known manufacturers can vary from one another, even when they come from the same production batch. Deviations of up to 200 Kelvin from the selected color temperature are perfectly normal and generally manageable. But if you’re unlucky, one fixture may be 200 Kelvin warmer than indicated, while another is 200 Kelvin cooler. A total difference of 400 Kelvin is clearly visible, yet difficult to correct manually because it’s almost impossible to determine exactly how far each light deviates from its displayed value.
The more light sources there are on set, the harder it becomes to judge everything by eye. This is where a measuring tool such as the Datacolor LightColor Meter proves its value. Accurate color temperature measurement makes it possible to synchronize multiple light sources and create consistent lighting conditions. But why measure at all if you can’t change the ambient lighting?
Available Light Shooting and White Balance Challenges
What is Available Light?
When you have no control over the lighting at a shooting location, it’s commonly referred to as shooting with “available light.” Thanks in part to the excellent low-light capabilities of modern cameras, this has become standard practice not only for news and documentary crews, but also for productions that prioritize authenticity over heavy staging.
During a documentary shoot, we were tasked with recording the official opening ceremony celebrating the 1,300th anniversary of Reichenau Monastery Island inside the cathedral. The Minister-President of Baden-Württemberg and numerous other distinguished guests were attending, which meant strict security measures and a very limited area from which media crews were allowed to work.
At the same time, churches almost always present particularly challenging mixed-light situations. Daylight enters through the windows, but stained-glass windows often alter its color. In the nave of the cathedral, various ceiling fixtures emit relatively cool artificial light, while the chancel is illuminated with warm white lighting. As a result, different mixed-light situations exist throughout the building, depending on the location.
The challenge in these environments is that every camera position can be exposed to a different mix of daylight and artificial light, making correct camera white balance settings essential for achieving consistent color reproduction.
Limitations of Automatic White Balance in Mixed Lighting
The standard response to this type of lighting is automatic white balance. However, in complex mixed-light environments with varying color temperatures, automatic white balance systems are often unable to produce consistent results across multiple cameras. In addition, it often takes too long after recording begins before it adapts to the correct color temperature. As a result, footage frequently starts with an incorrect color cast before gradually correcting itself. During documentary productions, however, you don’t have that time. Every shot has to be right the first time because there are no second takes.
To capture different camera angles correctly from assigned shooting positions and ensure the footage cuts together seamlessly, having the correct white balance already set in the cameras is invaluable. Accurate color temperature measurements help create a reliable white balance workflow and ensure greater consistency throughout a multicamera production.
This minimizes differences between shots and saves a tremendous amount of time during color grading. The solution is simple: measure the lighting on location beforehand using the LightColor Meter. Iideally before VIP guests arrive. In most cases, this can be coordinated with the security team.
Since the various shooting positions were only a few meters apart, we carried out all color measurements the day before. We measured every location individually. The altar, chancel, and lectern each produced different white balance values from both camera positions.
We wrote these measured color temperature and white balance values down and attached them to each tripod. This allows us as camera operators to switch quickly with little efforts between predefined white balance settings whenever the shooting position changed.
Practical White Balance Workflow Using the Datacolor LightColor Meter
Measure Before the Event Begins
Since the various shooting positions were only a few meters apart, we carried out all color measurements the day before. We measured every location individually. The altar, chancel, and lectern each produced different white balance values from both camera positions.
Create White Balance Checklist
We wrote these measured color temperature and white balance values down and attached them to each tripod. This allows us as camera operators to switch quickly with little efforts between predefined white balance settings whenever the shooting position changed.
Completely analog, yet extremely precise and helpful. A color temperature checklist created with the Datacolor LightColor Meter helps ensure the correct color temperature is set for each camera angle, significantly reducing the amount of digital color correction and post-production work required later.
The chancel, with its particularly complex mix of lighting, presents the greatest challenge for the cameras, especially since the color of the light differs depending on the camera position. In this situation, measuring color beforehand becomes invaluable because the camera’s automatic white balance reacts too slowly to sudden lighting changes.
When high-profile figures such as the Minister-President and the bishop are speaking at the lectern, media personnel usually have very limited freedom of movement. Since you have to work with the available lighting in these situations, knowing the white balance values and even the exposure information in advance makes post-production dramatically easier.
Measuring Color Temperature and Exposure with One Tool
More Than a Traditional Light Meter

Conclusion: Better White Balance, Less Color Grading
White balance remains a significantly underestimated aspect of multicamera productions, particularly when you have no control over the lighting conditions and must work with whatever is available. Relying solely on automatic white balance often creates unnecessary work during post-production because different cameras react differently and continuously adjust white balance while recording. This makes editing the footage together much more difficult.
Changing white balance values within a single clip can even render otherwise valuable footage nearly unusable, since correcting every frame over several seconds would require an enormous amount of work. For this reason, we’ve traditionally preferred using a fixed white balance setting, even if it wasn’t perfectly accurate, because a consistently slightly incorrect white balance is far preferable to one that constantly changes.
With the Datacolor LightColor Meter, we now have the right tool to determine accurate color temperature values that can be entered directly into the cameras. Measuring ambient light in advance allows us to create practical white balance checklists for every shooting position, reduce unnecessary post-production work, improve source file quality, and achieve more consistent results across multiple cameras.
Ideally, the camera’s user presets are sufficient, allowing operators to switch quickly between different preset white balance values as they move from one shooting position to another.
