Soy Shen
As an Associate Professor of Art, I have dedicated nearly two decades to higher education in photography theory and digital media, bridging academia and industry. As a SONY/LEOFOTO ambassador and UNDP collaborating photographer, my visual narratives balance scholarly rigor with commercial innovation.
Industry Collaboration Network
I maintain strategic partnerships with leading photography brands across the industry ecosystem:
Official imaging projects:
Primary photographer for Sony A7RV full-frame mirrorless official samples. Demonstration shooter for Sony’s G-Master lens lineup
Mobile imaging development:
Conducted specialized training for Huawei’s imaging engineers (Shenzhen HQ & Songshan Lake R&D Center). Contributed to computational photography algorithm research for Xiaomi and VIVO
Landscape PIXEL
As co-founder of “Landscape PIXEL,” I maintain active technical exchanges with R&D teams at:
Canon | Nikon | FUJIFILM | OM SYSTEM | Panasonic | Sigma | Tamron | DJI
This unique industry-academia synergy allows me to integrate cutting-edge technologies into my teaching before they reach mainstream adoption.

Creative Philosophy
Whether documenting refugee portraits in the contested Nagorno-Karabakh region between Armenia and Azerbaijan, completing shoots at base camps of 14 peaks soaring above 8,000 meters, conducting pre-release imaging tests for Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chips, or diving into World War II shipwrecks to capture their decaying engine compartments—these seemingly fragmented scenarios share a unifying core: to harness technical precision to convey the emotive temperature of imagery, ensuring every pixel bears both verifiable academic rigor and the irreplicable magic of fleeting moments.
Snow-capped mountains, the Milky Way, and the reflection on the water surface, with moonlight shining on the golden peaks—everything is perfectly composed. Yet behind this breathtaking image lies the harsh reality: an altitude of over 4,500 meters, temperatures as low as -10°C, and the ever-present threat of wild brown bears that could appear at any moment nearby.
Which visual mediums do you use?
I actively work across photography, videography, digital design, and digital media education, while producing official sample imagery for leading photography brands. My specialties span landscape photography, documentary storytelling, aerial drone cinematography, underwater exploration photography, and expedition-driven travel narratives.
How did you get started in this?
My photographic journey began in elementary school when I received my first camera. By junior high, I had established a home darkroom where I hand-processed and printed black-and-white film. Like many passionate stories, the more I shot, the more my work gained recognition—featured in publications and exhibitions. What began as a hobby evolved into a profession. After university, I returned to academia as an art educator. The ever-evolving nature of photography ensures my daily engagement with the industry’s cutting-edge developments. Over time, I progressed from teaching assistant to lecturer, and now serve as Associate Professor—a path where technical mastery and artistic pedagogy continuously intertwine.
Do you have a particular area of interest or genre you’re interested in?
My early exposure to photography at a young age led me to explore diverse photographic genres. Currently, I’m particularly drawn to capturing: Extreme-environment imaging (high-altitude conditions, deep-sea shipwrecks, subterranean caves). Human resilience in conflict zones. Indigenous communities preserving vanishing traditions.
After software simulation and calculation, I successfully captured the scene of the full moon rising behind the church on a moonlit night.
Who and/or what inspires you most?
My creative guidance comes from two aspects. One is the numerous photographers and photographic genres that emerged since the early 20th century. Their photography with different styles not only reveres art but also erodes it. This trend has intensified since then, eventually leading to art embracing photography and regarding it as an important part of art. The other is the current critical historical period in which photography has become an indispensable part of everyone’s mobile phone, and new inspirations are emerging in the brain at every moment.
What Datacolor color management tools are in your work bag/workspace?
In my workspace, the SpyderPro is my most essential color management tool. I work with multiple professional monitors, and SpyderPro helps me standardize the display results across them, making my workflow much more efficient.
Why is accurate color important within your workflow?
Photography is a personal form of artistic expression for photographers. Accurate colors help them control their expression and present their unique artistic style.
In a church in Yerevan, the capital of Armenia, a refugee child from a conflict zone prays for a long time in front of the candle stand.
What was the key factor that made you decide to use color management?
As an associate professor at a university, my students often encounter issues with color management, which leads to discrepancies between the images I see and what they intended to express.
A passer – by walked past the stalls in the bazaar, adding a sense of dynamism and the true essence of life to the picture. The entire scene depicts the daily look of the street market, brimming with strong local characteristics and a rich humanistic atmosphere.
What’s your biggest challenge at work these days?
Preserving the “Human Pixel” in the AI imaging tsunami.
This photo captures a person dressed in traditional attire. The individual wears a distinctive headdress adorned with vibrant red tassels, as well as metallic and bone – like ornaments. The clothing features exquisite colorful patterns. The overall appearance showcases a unique ethnic style. The background of blue sky and white clouds adds a broad and bright atmosphere to the image.
What’s your objective when you create something?
My core mission is to honor objective reality, transcend its surfaces, and manifest essential truth.
As a local passed by in the Egyptian temple, the scene was perfectly framed, as if it could have been the exact same sight a thousand years ago.
Best bit of advice you ever got?
Shoot more, savor more.
During the World Athletics Federation relay competition, light rain suddenly began to fall, and athletes delivered a wonderful match in the rain.
Do you have a fun fact you want to share about yourself?
I must salute the questionnaire designers—your repository of questions functions like a precision optical prism, refracting dimensions of my photographic journey I’d never perceived. While answering each query with devout focus, I unexpectedly recalibrated my self-awareness: what I’d anticipated as a technical survey ultimately became a deep development of my 20-year career. Never could I have imagined these thoughtfully crafted questions would prompt such profound reexamination of my life in photography—an unexpected gift of clarity, and easily the most fascinating surprise I’ve encountered in my professional odyssey.
