Match Pigment 4: How to Save Time with the Gamut Mapping Feature

powder

If you work in paint, pigments, or plastics, achieving the right color is crucial. But without the right color management software, that can be easier said than done.

In this post, we’ll talk about Datacolor Match Pigment’s Gamut Mapping feature—new with Match Pigment 4—and how it makes color formulation faster and easier.

Common Colorant Challenges

Have you ever tried to formulate a color and received a message that says “No Formulas Found”? A few things could cause this. One reason is that you’re unable to generate a formula using the colorants you selected.

That might sound like a simple fix, but it isn’t always. Here are a few challenges you might come up against after receiving a “No Formulas Found” message:

  1. Figuring out what colorant combinations will work
  2. Choosing which colorants to add
  3. Understanding whether or not you really need to select every colorant in your library

Why We Added Gamut Mapping to Match Pigment 4

We introduced Gamut Mapping in our latest version of Match Pigment to give you a simple answer to these questions and speed up your decision-making process.

Here’s how Gamut Mapping works:

Let’s say you want to match this yellow target.

And you find you’re unable to match the target with the selected colorants.

If you were using the Gamut Mapping feature of Match Pigment 4, you would have known beforehand that the target couldn’t be matched. After discovering this, you could have easily and quickly adjusted the selected ingredients to identify which combination of colorants will generate a match.

Here’s an example of the target falling outside of the gamut:

Now, by simply adding a colorant, I can see my target fall within the gamut:

Gamut Mapping is a significant advantage for anyone who has several colorants to choose from, since it helps reduce the time-consuming trial and error process of running several formula combinations.

Being able to visualize your ability to match a color before putting it together is just another way Match Pigment is saving you time and money.
